Larry Samuels has served as Secretary of the H.O.Y.A.S. Board of Directors for the past seven years and is currently a Member of the Board. He has been with the organization since its formation in February 2013. He provided field support, grant writing, and participated in Exec / Finance matters. Larry has also served as former President of the Board of Directors at Crossroads Community, Inc., a non-profit service and advocacy organization for adults and youth coping with behavioral and mental health illnesses and in recovery. Retired since 2012 following almost thirty years as a facilities manager for a large public library, for the past seven years he worked as a substitute teacher in grades pre-school through high school for general and special education and has also served as a Character Counts Coach for middle school students. He is also involved in several capacities at Shrewsbury Parish Episcopal Church and is a volunteer in various local community organizations, including the annual Legacy Day celebration, the Kent County Chapter of NAACP, the Social Action Committee for Racial Justice (SACRJ) / Education Sub-committee and Janes United Methodist Church renovation program. Larry served in the U.S. Navy as an E-5 Petty Officer 2nd Class Boiler Tender operating high pressure steam plants on a destroyer in the Gulf of Tonkin during Vietnam and on a destroyer escort circumnavigating Africa and through the Middle East, publishing a collection of short stories based on these experiences. Married to his wife Peg for thirty-three years, they have a son Paul, aged twenty-three, and a married daughter, Rebecca, aged twenty.
